Biomimicry and a Living Future: Crafting the future of materials

The International Living Future Institute’s annual Living Product Expo, set for September 13-15 in Pittsburgh, is focused on crafting materials of the future.

What does a material of the future look like? It’s a material that functions as “elegantly and efficiently as anything found in the natural world.” It’s an important and exciting concept; one that relies on biomimicry as a tool to achieve. The Expo provides a place to share find inspiration for this kind of innovation, and turn that inspiration into action. The Expo provides an opportunity for participants to share and discover disruptive new ideas and technologies that are reshaping the materials landscape, accelerating the pace of innovation and making Living Products possible today.

The Expo will also feature a host of keynote speakers, a set of educational tracks and a trade show exhibit hall. You can 10% off the cost of a conference pass with the code BIOMIMICRY10.

Also this year, the ILFI and The Biomimicry Institute will celebrate the inaugural winners of the Living Product Challenge, which is an ILFI program that promotes the creation materials informed by biomimicry and biophilia, and that are manufactured by processes powered only by renewable energy and within the water balance of the places they are made. Living Products improve our quality of life and bring joy through their beauty and functionality.

The 2016 winners, AquaCity Garden, were announced in early August. AquaCity Gardens are modular garden systems designed for interior spaces that uses less water, is more space efficient, and promotes healthy eating. They were developed by drawing inspiration from bees, the lobed comb jellyfish, the Suriname sea toad, as well as the earth’s water cycle to develop this aquaponic system. Here’s a Sustainable Brands story about the team and their winning product.

At last year’s expo, our team was at the expo to talk about innovation inspired by nature. This year, our biomimicry chemist Mark Dorfman will be a judge at the Breakthrough Innovation: Transform the Materials Universe session, which will feature short, innovative presentations from manufacturers and designers. Participants will learn about the latest developments in potential Living Product materials.

We hope you can join us there. Don’t forget, you can save 10% on registration by clicking here and using the code BIOMIMICRY10.
