Biomimicry Professional certificate program: Meet the 2016-2018 cohort

Biomimicry 3.8 welcomed 18 new members to its biomimicry community this week, an elite multi-disciplinary group that makes up the 2016-2018 Biomimicry Professional (BPRo) certificate program cohort.

In a highly competitive process, “each member was chosen because of their passion, qualifications, and dedication to biomimicry,” said Dr. Dayna Baumeister, program founder and lead instructor. “This 2016-2018 cohort undoubtedly represents another stellar group that is ready to learn what it means to lead in a world mentored by life’s genius.”

The globally renowned Biomimicry Professional (BPro) certificate program is a part-time, two-year course that integrates an accredited Master’s of Science in Biomimicry degree through Arizona State University with an in-person immersion program run by Biomimicry 3.8. The core purpose of the program is to train and mobilize an international, networked community of professional biomimics who become the leaders in this burgeoning practice.

The program was created and is led by Baumeister, Biomimicry 3.8 co-founder and has already certified 48 Biomimicry Professionals. This year’s program will be co-taught by Toby Herzlich, founder of Biomimicry for Social Innovation, who is a leadership trainer, master facilitator and a Biomimicry Specialist.

The 2016 cohort includes members from Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, India, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.S. They are professionals working in a broad range of industries, including biologists, engineers, social innovators, and designers. This is the fourth BPro cohort.

The cohort will study in the cypress swamps of Louisiana in May for its first immersion experience, and will meet in five other ecosystems, including the Sonoran desert, tropical and temperate rainforests, and the forests of the Canadian Rockies during the two-year program.

The in-person immersion experiences fused with the online coursework represents a next-generation education hybrid that builds on the three core values of biomimicry: the ethics of sustainability, the innovative emulation of the natural world, and reconnection with the natural world. The program has evolved to focus on professional leadership, ensuring students are prepared to advance themselves and their skills, and motivate and inspire others around biomimicry.

“Cohort graduates not only are trained to infuse the practical applications of biomimicry into their careers,” Baumeister said, “but develop a sense of purpose and vision of what it means to foster the meme of biomimicry as leaders and engaged world citizens.”
