We ARE nature: Ways to celebrate Earth Day

We’ll be among the estimated 1 billion people celebrating Earth Day 2016 this year, not only because the events help inspire people to protect the Earth for future generations, but also because it’s a perfect time to remind ourselves that we ARE nature.

Our co-founder Janine Benyus explains:

Biomimicry works precisely because there is no difference between what we do and what other organisms do—the boundary between us and the rest of the world is a false one that dissolves when you consider what is really important, what makes life worth living. We are in a long line of organisms that have sprung from this earth, each trying to figure out how to stay here, how to take care of the place that will care for our offspring.

This year, Earth Day events will focus on the urgent need to plant new trees and forests worldwide. Also this year, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has invited every world leader to the United Nations to officially sign the Paris Climate Agreement and the agreement is being opened for signatures on April 22. Want to join in on those celebrations? You can find an Earth Day celebration near you here.

Other ways to celebrate:

Love Thy Nature, a film featuring our own Dr. Dayna Baumeister will be premiering in 40 cities on Earth Day. The film takes viewers on a cinematic journey through the beauty and intimacy of our relationship with the natural world. And it shows how nature’s genius can lead us to a highly advanced and conscious new era. View the film’s trailer here. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Our friends at Great Lakes Biomimicry just released a great new video to show how they inspire people to (re)connect with nature and learn the practice of biomimicry. It’s a perfect video to view on Earth Day. Watch the video here and find out more about GL Biomimicry here.

Next week, two Certified Biomimicry Professionals Melina Angel and Hugo Alfonso Araujo Cruz will be speaking at the International Biomimicry Symposium in South America. More information about the event can be found here.

This week brought a big news from our sister organization, The Biomimicry Institute, which announced that 2016 National Bioneers Conference will host the first-ever awards ceremony for the world’s premiere biomimicry design prize, the $100,000 Ray C. Anderson Foundation “Ray of Hope” Prize. The prize will be awarded to one of seven finalist teams in the Biomimicry Global Design Challenge. Each team has created project worthy of reaching the goal of creating a more sustainable future for Earth. Janine will also be speaking at Bioneers, held Oct. 21-23 in San Rafael, California.
