The practice of biomimicry is transdisciplinary by nature. In fact, “incorporating diversity” is part of Life’s Principles, the main operating conditions that help Life create conditions to Life. As we aim to empower people all over the world to use biomimicry as a framework for a cultural shift toward sustainable living, we continually see the benefits of bringing a diverse set of designers from all sectors, expertise, and backgrounds together to solve challenges.
In short, biomimicry isn’t just for biologists. And as our co-founder Dr. Dayna Baumeister likes to say, a “designer” can be anyone.
That’s why we are so excited to see the most recent list of students enrolled in our graduate degree programs (a Master’s of Science in Biomimicry and the Graduate Certificate program), run in partnership with Arizona State University since Spring 2015. There is an exhilarating amount of diversity among the students–from their professional backgrounds to their geographic location around the world.
Here’s a few of the exciting student stats:
- Since the launch in Spring 2015, 32 people have earned their MS in Biomimicry
- Another 92 are currently enrolled and are working toward their MS in Biomimicry
- Students have undergraduate degrees in everything from marketing to philosophy to nursing to engineering to early education and everywhere in between
- Of the current students, 37% enrolled in the MS program already hold graduate degrees
- Of the current graduate certificate students, 49% already hold graduate degrees
- Students have graduate degrees in everything from business administration to fine arts to environmental science to law degrees
- A quarter of all students live outside the U.S.
No doubt this diverse set of professionals will be ready to contribute to the finding sustainable solutions as they enter the world as budding biomimics. And next time Dayna gets an email asking her if a biology degree is necessary to enroll in our programs at ASU, she’ll have some awesome evidence to say, “no way!”
