Let’s reverse climate change together

Want to lead your company into a climate-friendly future?

Humans see carbon dioxide as the poison of our era. The rest of nature sees it as a building block. Plants use carbon to make sugars, starches, and cellulose. Corals use carbon to build reefs, and mollusks use carbon to manufacture their shells. Nature’s been writing the book on carbon chemistry for billions of years, and suddenly, it’s required reading for humanity.

“We all know we have to stop emitting greenhouse gases. We know we have to move to clean energy and use that energy wisely. But even that is not enough if we want to see life on earth, including us, thrive in the conditions that shaped us. What we need to do is recoup the carbon we lost over the last 200 years and actually reverse climate change.”
– Janine Benyus, Biomimicry 3.8 Co-founder

At Biomimicry 3.8, we know nature. Let us illuminate a proven pathway to reverse climate change now– and move humanity toward a guaranteed future on planet earth. Our biological intelligence innovations are mainstream, hopeful solutions that can allow companies to not only reach new carbon emission standards and targets, but leverage them as drivers of innovation. One small change multiplied by many can make all the difference.

By accessing the intelligence of 3.8 billion years of evolution, Biomimicry 3.8 provides earth-tested, yet novel solutions for your post-Paris climate strategies:

Eliminate and draw down carbon

Nature’s solutions are inherently energy-wise and habitat-enhancing; otherwise they wouldn’t still be operating. We translate these time-tested strategies into nature-inspired blueprints and design principles that can be used to reduce energy use and optimize distribution channels, all with the aim of drawing down carbon in any aspect of operations.

By using CO2 for supply chains

The next frontier is to capture and use the excess carbon that already exists in our economy and in our atmosphere. Nature is the master carbon chemist. A new breed of biomimicry companies are beginning to borrow nature’s recipes and turn carbon “pollution” into fuel, products, and materials. We can help you become a leader in carbon drawdown–by using CO2 and methane as feedstock for your processes, packaging, plastics, and building materials.

By implementing radical carbon drawdown practices

A profound strategy that draws down carbon is occurring underneath our feet, in healthy soils that store (or biosequester) carbon at deep levels for centuries. We can help your company become the “climate friendly” source, rewriting the best practices for your food, fiber, and bio-ingredient supply chain so that carbon-scrubbing soils are part of your brand’s story.

By participating in Mission Generous

Ecosystems provide services–cleaning water, filtering air, creating healthy soils, and supporting biodiversity–and there’s a move afoot to ask our cities and factories to do the same. In the post-zero, net-positive era, people will want to live in generous cities and work in generous companies that produce more ecosystem services than they consume. We can help you set aspirational goals for your company or city, and meet them using nature’s models. It’s local, it’s possible, and it’s one of those great things to contemplate: What if everyone did this?

How does nature manage carbon?

Narrated by Janine Benyus, Biomimicry 3.8 Co-founder

CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS

“Surface temperatures will remain approximately constant at elevated levels for many centuries after a complete cessation of net anthropogenic CO2 emissions… A large fraction of anthropogenic climate change resulting from CO2 emissions is irreversible on a multi-century to millennial timescale, EXCEPT in the case of a large net removal of CO2 from the atmosphere over a sustained period.”
– 2014 IPCC Summary for Policymakers

The International Panel on Climate Change meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP21/CMP11, will take place in Paris from November 30-December 11, 2015. COP21 will be a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.
